Deutsche Bank agreed to pay $553m to the US Department of Justice to avoid the filing of criminal charges against the bank for helping sell fraudulent tax shelters that cost the government billions in revenues.
The bank admitted it participated in 1,300 tax deals from 1996 through to 2002 that cost the US government $5.9bn in taxes, according to a deferred prosecution agreement filed in court.
